Ready to be inspired?
Handmade Arcade is your chance to shop from innovative artists and makers — and so much more. It’s also your chance to BE A MAKER — and participate in tutorials, public art projects, games, large-scale installations and hands-on workshops!
You’re invited to explore the Hands-on Handmade Activity Area. This FREE “craft-lab” environment is located adjacent to the main marketplace, and your chance to engage in collaboration, cooperative learning and creative expression.
Here are 5 reasons to get excited about Hands-On Handmade . . .
1. All ages and experience levels are welcome.
Even the youngest makers can create a masterpiece with Every Child, INC., when they decorate a popsicle stick and add it to a large-scale wooden quilt. And your child — or your inner child — can make a monster magnet with Songbird Artistry. Root through upcycled materials to create a friend (or foe) for your fridge! Both activities run all day from 11 AM to 6:45 PM.
2. You’ll explore new art forms.
Science meets style when you make LED bracelets with Assemble. Learn about circuitry when you turn LEDs and UV beads into electronic accessories. Then express yourself with Black-Out Poetry. Visit Bookish in the ‘Burgh to compose poetry using the pages of secondhand young-adult books, such as Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Hunger Games. These morning activities run from 11 AM to 2:30 PM.
3. You can get ready for the holidays.
Join Artists Image Resource to silkscreen your own piece of wrapping paper. You can take your new art with you, or use it on the spot to wrap up a gift you just purchased from a Handmade Arcade vendor! (11 AM to 6:45 PM.) Stay in the holiday spirit with Millvale Library and learn how to recycle Christmas cards and other materials from nature to create a holiday decoration. (3 to 6:30 PM.)
4. You can collaborate with new friends.
Join Pittsburgh mural artist Sandy Kessler Kaminski and meet new crafty cohorts when you take part in a large-scale paint-by-number process on canvas. (11 AM to 2:30 PM.) Get your hands dirty with Union Project teaching artists when you create a clay sculpture to contribute to a temporary collaborative clay and mixed-media installation. (All day from 11 AM to 6:45 PM.)
5. Yes, it’s ALL FREE!
That goes for the take-home pieces too, so head over to Metal Stamping with Touchstone Center for Crafts to learn about the metal stamping process and create your own metal charm. Practice basic jewelry-making skills with The Artsmiths of Pittsburgh Arts and Cultural Center as you design and keep a new handmade keychain. These afternoon activities run from 3 to 6:30 PM.
