Participate in tutorials, public art projects, games, large-scale installations, hands-on workshops and much more!
Hands-On Handmade is curated and designed to be accessible for all. Serving more than 4,000 participants, Hands-on Handmade believes in:

ALL DAY ACTIVITIES
11 AM to 6:45 PM

Typewriter Expo! with BatCat Press
What’s that tapping sound? It’s our collection of vintage manual typewriters! Participants will be invited to test out our machines, and can stay awhile to write out a thank-you note, a poem, a shopping list, or whatever else comes to mind. Adults and children alike will be fascinated by these snappy machines.
Popsicle Quilt with Every Child, INC
Decorate a popsicle stick with acrylic paint, markers, and more, then add it to a collaborative popsicle quilt creation. The Every Child team will glue these creations into a pattern — creating a large-scale wooden quilt. Participants are also welcome to join in on the construction of the quilt. Want to take a small creation home? Additional popsicle sticks will be provided for make-and-take purposes.

Create friendly monster magnets using upcycled materials! What color is your monster going to be? Get creative and make a fun new friend to liven up your kitchen fridge! Materials provided. All skill levels welcome.
Collaborative Clay Photobooth with Union Project
Join Union Project teaching artists to learn about ceramic hand-building skills, and get your hands messy experimenting and expressing yourself in clay. Create a clay sculpture to contribute to a temporary collaborative clay and mixed-media installation on sit. When you’re done, document your experience by snapping a fun photo-booth image with your creation!
11 AM to 2:30 PM

Paper Weaving Recycled Postcards with Contemporary Craft
Give Contemporary Craft’s postcards from past exhibitions new life through paper weaving! Paper weaving is a fun and simple art, with countless potential using pattern and color. After the participants finish with the paper weaving, they can turn the piece into a holiday ornament or a coaster. Once learned, paper weaving is something that can be done at home with magazines, junk mail and more.

Participants will be able to work in a paint-by-number process on the canvas. Once completed, Kessler will add more color and detail to finish the work. The finished piece(s) will be auctioned online once completed.

Get inspired to create your own fabric art creations with this fast and easy technique for dyeing fabrics using Sharpie markers and alcohol. Participants will draw colorful designs on pre-washed and ironed cotton fabric using Sharpie markers and then spray their creation with rubbing alcohol. As the fabric soaks up the alcohol, the color spreads – resulting in a beautiful and unique fabric dyeing technique.
