2015 Hands-on Handmade


Our 2015 Hands-on Handmade lineup of interactive programming is complete! Check out our list of amazing craft artists, arts organizations and demonstrators who will be on-site this year – continuing our tradition of bringing consumers and creators together for a captivating and educational craft experience. Hands-on Handmade features day-long, half-day and two-hour activities.

Please note: Hands-on Handmade is designed as a space for intergenerational hands-on exploration, where adults, children and teens are invited participate in art and craft activities together. It is not a drop-off program. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Opening Ceremony:

Day-Long Activities: 
Coloring Book Making with 
Artists Image Resource & CAPA High School
Learn about the process of screen-printing and make your own mini-coloring book. Choose from several covers to screen print, then assemble a small coloring book for your very own! All-day activity (11 am – 7 pm)

Many Hands with The Union Project
Have fun getting your hands dirty, learning about creating with clay, craft a unique gift that will be given to a stranger, and add your own piece to the project’s growing flock of clay animals throughout the day. All-day activity (11 am – 7 pm)

Altered States with Cr8ive Inspirations
Transform clipboards, journals, tags and old file folders into beautiful pieces of art! All-day activity (11 am – 7 pm)

Spin Art Records with Sunburst School of Music
Create your own colorful works of spin art using donated vinyl records and paint. All-day activity (11 am – 7 pm)

Mod Selfie Station with Pittsburgh Vintage Mixer
Dress up, get styled, strike a pose and create a keepsake in a Mod Selfie Station—a fabulous new twist on the everyday act of taking your own photo. All-day activity (11 am – 7 pm)

Leather Stitching with Fabnik
Learn the traditional leather saddle stitch, choose from a variety of thread and leather colors, experiment with new tools and make your very own key fob! (11 am – 7 pm)

Puppeteer Mike Mascaro

Keeping the day lively and entertaining will be a 10-foot tall dancing puppet making his way throughout the Convention Center. (12 pm – 6 pm)

Half-Day Activities: 

LED Origami with Assemble
Make your very own LED Origami Box, which looks like a paper lantern, by folding, creasing and making something 2D into 3D and adding illumination using real LEDs. (11 am – 3 pm)

SHARP Robotics & Sarah Heinz House
Participate in robot-related hands-on activities, meet high school students who built a fully functioning robot and then interact with the robotic creature! (11 am – 3 pm)

Weaving Fabric on a Loom with MAKESHOP
The wooden floor loom from the Children’s Museum will be travelling downtown for the morning to visit Hands-on Handmade! Learn how to weave fabric using a wooden hand loom.  (11 am – 3 pm)

Hands-on History with Heinz History Center
Explore the many everyday inventions and innovations that were born right here in Pittsburgh and went on to impact the world, and participate in hands-on activities that connect local history with scientific advancements and cutting-edge innovation. (3 pm – 7 pm)

Tree Branch Ornaments with Pop Craft
Decorate cut tree branches with paint-dipped evergreen boughs and stencils to design your very own natural and rustic ornament to hang on a doorknob, hook or tree.  (3 pm – 7 pm)

Two Hour Activities: 

Best Practices for Pen and Marker with Out of Hand
Watch demonstrations of pen and marker rendering techniques that create predictable images and calligraphy pieces, and learn to use pens and markers to create greeting cards, logotypes, illustrations and calligraphic works.  (3 pm – 5 pm)

One Hour Activities: 

Herbal Oil Infusions with Apothecary Muse
Select and prepare herbs and oils to collect and infuse in labeled jars, discover the healing properties of plants, gain a new sense of respect for nature, explore your own health and well-being, and learn about the significance of locally processed foods and plants. TIME AND PLACE TO BE DETERMINED
