Thanks for visiting Blakbird Jewelry’s maker page! My name is Selima Dawson and I am a visual artist and designer. I started Blakbird Jewelry in 2010 as a means to provide for myself between jobs. I come from a family of creative people who taught me that I could make just about anything. The first Blakbird pieces were made from brass tooling foil and recycled and collected materials. I now work with bronze and recycled aluminum. Blakbird has had many starts and stops but has grown considerably in recent years. I like to share parts of my personal journey that allowed me to take Blakbird to the next level.
ABOUT MY PRODUCTS:
My jewelry pieces are cut by hand from sheet metal, approximately 26 gauge. I began by filing and sanding everything by hand but I am incorporating some machinery as I expand production. The metal is sanded to achieve a matte brushed finish. Findings and hooks are handmade to suit each style. I use lead and nickel-free wire that is friendly to all ears. The metal is untreated so the wearer can decide whether to polish or not. A friend once said, “I think that there is a Blakbird style just about everyone.” I am greatly inspired by nature, art, and different cultures. I like to think that the pieces are somewhere between ancient and modern.
