Bryce Hemington Ceramics
Hey Folks my name is Bryce Hemington I’m a ceramic artist and teacher living and working in Pittsburgh Pa. I love making and sharing my passion for pottery with my friends and my students. When I’m not teaching at Manchester Craftsman’s Guild I work out of my home studio in lovely Brighton Heights. I make primarily wood fired pottery and love the interplay between the geometric patterns on the surface of my work and the organic ash patterns left as part of the firing process. If you’re unfamiliar with wood firing the primary fuel for the kiln, which gets up to 2400 degrees, is wood. As part of the firing process the minerals in the wood ash get hot enough that they form a glaze on anything in the kiln leaving a marker of the path of the flame as it moves through the kiln. This process is labor intensive but it affords me the opportunity to connect with a great community of potters when we come together to fire our work, which can take 30 hour – 36 hours of continuous effort. Everything I make is intended to be used and is microwave and dishwasher safe.
