Hello, I’m Juliane Gorman. My work tells a story of possibilities. Formally trained in textiles at the Rhode Island School of Design, I also studied millinery in the evenings at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Later, as I pursued other careers and a family, my art quietly fermented.
Then, a dozen years ago at a craft fair, I serendipitously spotted a felted bracelet. While researching how to make felted objects, I discovered how to make felted hats. The process seemed elegantly straightforward: sprinkle soapy water onto fluffy wool. Next, massage patiently and intensely to sculpt this natural fiber into a distinctive and beautiful hat. At last, I found a way to combine my love of color with my passion for millinery.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTS:
I strive to create wearable art that shows a wearer new possibilities. In donning an ArtHat, a person can boldly explore their inner self. My headwear is comfortable, durable, and sustainably made. Due to the nature of wool, it is also water, flame, and odor-resistant.
Anything can inspire a hat. Mostly, I find inspiration in nature: from the ocean’s magnificence to the charm of a simple, ripe strawberry. The designs are elegant, a little whimsical, and always unique. Hat styles range from everyday wearables to fantasy concoctions, including chic berets, intimate cloches, fashionable fedoras, and, of course, magical wizard hats.
My work lives in private collections in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. Pittsburgh’s chilly winters make felted hats an excellent choice when you want to be cozily warm, yet stylishly cool. You can find my work under the FeltHappiness label.
