Glass Botanicals by laur
How it all Started
Welcome to Glass Botanicals by laur. My name is Lauren, a glass artist living and creating in Western Pennsylvania from my home studio. I grew up in a small town that has many historical and architectural buildings that have beautiful stained glass windows from as early as the 1800’s. I have always be drawn towards stained glass windows and the kaleidoscope of colors mixed with the dance of light. When a family member graciously gifted me an older kiln they were no longer using, my husband jumped on the idea and bought me a fused glass starter kit. I immediately started experimenting with all the materials, a few years later created Glass Botanicals by laur. One of the best parts of my small business is being able to be home with my two girls and including them in the creating process.
The Process
Kiln formed glass is the process of combining separate pieces of glass and melting them together in a kiln at high temperatures. The different stages of melting glass is a slow, very specific, controlled process which is essential for maintaining quality. Fused glass is a very particular unforgiving medium. It is an art mixed with science. Creating my work begins with meticulously planning and designing my pattern and colors. I then cut the glass and assemble my design. When creating firing schedules there are many factors to consider. You must account for shrinkage, varying thicknesses and the way in which heat affects individual components. Every piece is made by hand, piece by piece, it is truly one of a kind art
