My name is Kathryn Carr of GO CARR GO; I am an artist and illustrator working with hand-cut paper since 2008. The majority of my art depicts lighthearted anthropomorphic animals in silhouette. I am totally entranced by silhouettes and their duality. They reveal themselves by their profiles while keeping secrets within the confines of their outlines. They invite the viewer to make their own speculations.
I draw inspiration from the storybooks of my childhood. My favorite authors were Hans Christian Anderson and The Brothers Grimm. Their tales imprinted me with stirring images and aroused my imagination, one that I’ve carried with me my entire life. I am also influenced by the German-style of paper cutting, Scherenschnitte (pronounced: shear-en-SNIT-a). It focuses on scenes from everyday life.
About the Art
My designs begin by sketching an idea and giving it a sense of movement and playfulness. I will then draw the composition on the back of the paper that is to be cut. Using a scissor or knife blade, I’ll carefully cut away the positive or negative spaces to reveal the image. A selection of originals are reproduced. I present this art form to the world through gallery shows, teaching classes, illustrating children’s books, curating a line of greeting cards, and setting up at art venues like Handmade Arcade!
