Joe Allbright Algorithmic Art

I am a mathematician who has created ‘algorithmic art’ as a hobby my whole life (hand-drawn fractals, laser-cut sacred geometry). This creativity has been supercharged recently as AI tools have expanded what it means to draw by algorithm. My interest is in using AI to create and explore styles not seen anywhere else. What does it look like to have the sun rise like tangled hair over the hills? A delicate damask wallpaper of animal bones? A surrealist mathematician’s children’s storybook illustration? Some of these are playful, others are eerie; a few are photo-realistic, but most are highly stylized. All are fascinating to explore in detail, and all have a story.
AI art can be controversial, especially when it aims to mimic or replace artists, or when it’s done lazily. Each of my pieces were the result of dozens or hundreds of trials and tests and they were carefully selected, tuned, edited, and reproduced in print. I aim to represent the positive creative potential of AI artwork, and look forward to live-demonstrating the tool with visitors to the booth. The GiclĂ©e prints have all been printed locally.
