Welcome to the Lizzee Solomon Studios maker page! I’m Lizzee, and I have been making artwork using laser cutters for over 10 years. I’ve been making art for over 30 years, all starting with drawing imaginary creatures, cartoon characters, and funny caricatures as a kid. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with a BFA in Studio Art and Hispanic Studies, I studied woodcarving in Oaxaca, Mexico. It was there that I fell in love with alebrijes – traditional, brightly-painted wood sculptures of mythological creatures and earthly animals. I was fascinated by the process of creating these objects, mesmerized by their bold colors, and intrigued by their cultural significance.
While I did not pursue woodcarving after returning to the US, I remained dedicated to incorporating wood in my own art practice. I worked for a local makerspace, and taught myself how to use a CNC laser cutter to cut material quickly and precisely. I appreciate how the laser can take a simple drawing and transform it into something large, small, or anything in-between. For the past decade, my making process has blended techniques inspired by traditional folk art, lowbrow art, and new technology. Working this way enables me to experiment all the time, discovering delightful and unexpected combinations of color and texture.
I love to see people’s faces light up when they connect with one of my pieces, be it a work of art to hang on the wall, or a simple refrigerator magnet. Regardless of scale, each piece I create is done with intent, care, and craftsmanship. These artworks are defined by their vibrant colors, bold patterns, and creepy/cute aesthetic. I believe in art for all, both conceptually and economically. In addition to my work in the Studio, I teach at and serve on the board of directors at Protohaven – a non-profit makerspace in Wilkinsburg – dedicated to providing access to shop equipment and education to folks in our community.
