Gingerly Press is the printmaking studio practice of letterpress artist, Lindsay Schmittle. Lindsay creates colorful, modern and earth-friendly original artworks & stationery products with the 500-year-old craft of handset letterpress printing. Lindsay honors this traditional printing method by continuing to use the vintage metal & wood type in her original artworks today, hand-setting every individual letter, dot and line in a composing stick just like job printers did hundreds of years ago. She complements these vintage elements with large swaths of color printed from her hand-carved geometric blocks, made of oak plywood, MDF or found natural textures like tree bark.
Inspired by her adventures in nature, Lindsay designs playful original artworks that share nature’s simple stories. She has created collections of artwork inspired by her Appalachian Trail thru-hike, her Artist Residency working with the Maijuna Indigenous Community in the Peruvian Amazon, and her many hikes on trails local to Pittsburgh.
Lindsay also offers hands-on letterpress printing & bookbinding workshops designed for beginners to the old-school craft in the Lawrenceville-based Gingerly Press studio.
Gingerly Press plants one tree in a U.S. National Forest for every product sold, with over 4,200 trees planted so far!
