Meet the Maker: Using stoneware as our medium, at East Wheeling Clayworks we craft each piece by hand with a key focus on usability and comfort. We strive to capture the small ergonomic details that elevate your everyday experiences. Our work incorporates glazes selected and/or made in house to provide a beautiful and durable finish that allows the hallmarks of the production process to show through in throwing lines and finishing marks. We often leave some raw ceramic at the bottom of each piece to allow the user to feel the tactile nature of the clay used to make the piece. By adhering to our signature style, we have created a cohesive line that blends seamlessly with almost any decor. This Industrial Modern motif taps into our Appalachian/Rust Belt roots while appealing to a wide variety of aesthetics. We’ve designed our pieces to incorporate seamlessly into everyday activities. We do not want to make the china set that only gets used once or twice a year. The coffee mug you reach for every morning; your favorite plate; that soap dish that preserves your favorite bar soap while providing the perfect pop of color on your bathroom sink are the objects we strive to create. With a little care, our pieces will last for generations. We pride ourselves on putting quality over profit margin by making high quality pots that you want to use every day. Our pots have traveled far beyond our local area, appearing across the country and abroad. We’ve even had a well-loved cappuccino cup make an Antarctic trek. As contemporary potters, we strive to stand on the shoulders of craftspeople who came before us to create pieces that go back to basics while elevating everyday experiences. We design each piece with function, ergonomics, durability and style forefront in our mind. The time spent on the small details can be felt as soon as you hold our pieces in your hands.
