Meet the Makers: Under the name of Gingerly Press, I create colorful, modern and earth-friendly letterpress printed artworks & stationery products with the 500-year-old craft of handset letterpress printing. I honor this traditional printing method by continuing to use the vintage metal & wood type in my original artworks today, hand-setting every individual letter, dot and line in a composing stick just like job printers did hundreds of years ago. I complement these vintage elements with large swaths of color printed from my hand-carved geometric blocks, made of oak plywood, MDF or found natural textures like tree bark. I print all of my artworks on my vintage SP15 Vandercook Press from 1962 and antique 10x15 Chandler & Price Press from 1915. Through this process of letterpress printing, my crisp & colorful products actively work to preserve printing history by keeping the antique presses, type and other equipment in use. I create to share nature’s small & often overlooked beauties to encourage others to slow down, be mindful, and soak up the simple joys nature has to offer all around us. I’ve created collections of artwork inspired by my Appalachian Trail thru-hike, my Artist Residency working with the Maijuna Indigenous Community in the Peruvian Amazon, and my many hikes on trails local to Pittsburgh. I print on 100% recycled paper and I plant one tree in a U.S. National Forest for every product sold, with over 3,600 trees planted so far!
