Meet the Maker: My work with elements from nature aims to raise awareness of our planet, the ecosystems that exist within it, and our responsibility to preserve and protect the flora and fauna surrounding us. The pieces are meant to inspire people to explore their environments, rural, and/or urban, and observe the ever present exploitation of the planet’s natural resources. From global warming to the increasing losses of species of plants, animals and insects, we should be alarmed for our safety as well as the planets future. My use of recycled paper, cardboard, honeycomb packing materials is a commentary on our waste of not only raw materials but also a lack of exploration for a future blueprint of preservation and innovation. I have combined the use of recycled materials with hand cut botanical images. These elements have been re-discovered and were not sourced by the destruction of paper but rather reproduced onto paper to be used repeatedly to create art, focusing on reuse of a universally, understood material, paper. The varied layers and images within each sculpture propel the goal of exploration, appreciate the dangers we must address, and face the living realities of our global decisions. Each sculpture that I create elicits an emotion that is represented through the manipulation of paper. Rebirth, flight. mystery, exploration, contemplation, and discovery, are the cornerstones of the art I share with my audience.
