Knot & Figure

Meet the Maker: Knot & Figure came to be through many years learning the practical yet artistic craft of woodworking, along with an ever-growing appreciation for our natural environment. Woodworking is a perfect medium for creating beautiful and useful objects which don’t obscure their original form, even if significantly altered in shape. The items I share bring a piece of the natural world into homes, lives, and daily routines. Every piece is inherently unique and highlights the natural beauty of its subjects with reminders of the material's original form, like the knots where a tree once sprouted a new branch, and the complex grain patterns formed by its annual growth. Through the use of industrial power tool operations and traditional hand tool techniques alike, my practice transforms raw lumber into elegant and comforting lighting pieces, unique serving boards, hand shaped combs, and more. While my offerings vary based upon available scrap and secondhand material as well as creative evolution, my line of checkered cheese boards has always remained a staple. I use a method unusual to typical cutting/serving boards to incorporate more organic shapes and intersections of wood types, producing a though provoking centerpiece to be gathered around and enjoyed in our happiest of times. With a focus on environmentalism, Knot & Figure also prioritizes sustainable practices and reducing impact on ecosystems. Whenever possible, reclaimed and discarded wood is used in my creations, and for every sale made, a donation is made to plant a new tree.
