Meet the Maker: Stone + Sparrow is the ceramic studio founded by Kate Marchand. I blend traditional methods with modern designs to produce one-of-a-kind pieces for interior spaces. While my body of work is ever-evolving, my devotion to minimalist ceramics for home and hands has remained my north star. I primarily work in mid-fired stoneware clay as my medium. Whether thrown or sculpted, the pieces I make are continually inspired by the textures, lines, and interplay of nature and architecture with the aim of making simple spaces extraordinary. I am particularly influenced by the intersection of man-made forms and naturally occurring materials, such as stone fences or adobe homes. The way these materials are formed into something that they otherwise would never have become peaks my curiosity. I am enticed to think about what my hands might make from a material that would otherwise be left settled in the ground. I started my practice as a small-batch pottery studio but have grown into making distinctive fixtures and sculptural objects. I recently expanded into teaching intimate classes and workshops. My goal as an artist is to continue growing my sculptural practice while sharing my passion, design thinking and learned techniques with others who also want to make things by hand.
