I am blacksmith who forges kitchen tools inspired by medieval European archaeology. I hand forge cooking knives from carbon steel, Damascus steel I make in my shop, and my own steel that I smelt from stone (hematite ore) and charcoal in a medieval-style bloomery furnace. These ancient steelmaking processes create blades with uniquely organic, watery-patterned surfaces whose appearance I enhance with traditional forging techniques and hand-carved maple and fruitwood handles. My finished designs translate the visual language of medieval iron artifacts to the kitchen, for example what would a medieval spearhead look like if it were a hand-forged spatula? The materials and processes I use to create each object allow my customers to encounter history and beauty in the everyday tools we use to feed ourselves and the people we love. Everything I create is made by hand using my collection of restored antique forging tools in Mars, PA.
