Carbon Compost

Over 80 billion pounds of food is wasted every year in the United States. Buried in a landfill, our discards decompose without oxygen producing methane (a toxic gas 30X worse for the environment than Carbon Dioxide). When that same material is processed in a compost facility, it creates nutrient-rich soil our farmers love and avoids generating harmful emissions.
Carbon Compost provides an easy way for Pittsburgh residents, businesses, and events to protect our planet and grow our gardens. Sign-up online, receive a bin and fill it with kitchen scraps and other organic waste. Every other week set the bin outside on the designated day and we’ll swap it with a fresh one. All material is weighed and customers receive personalized impact reports highlighting pounds diverted and emissions reduced. In the spring the finished soil is returned to our customers to use in their garden or houseplants. To get started, visit: Carboncompostpgh.com
