Hi, I’m Julie Zaichuk-Ryan of South Atlantic Stitching Company, living and working in beautiful Friendship! I am a maker of traditional-meets-modern quilts, wall hangings, and ready-to-frame art pieces. I have been sewing for over ten years, with a specialty in handwork. I sew as much as possible by hand for the very reason that some wouldn’t: it’s slow work that cannot be mass-produced and allows the unique shape of my stitches to shine, like a fingerprint. The piece you choose will be completely unique and made with love, not speed. I honor the work women have done for generations by cherishing these skills and bringing them into the modern home.
Although people often mistake my matted, ready-to-frame art pieces for prints, they are in fact completely sewn by hand, and no two are the same. My quilts and wall hangings are made mostly by machine, though I try to feature a hand-stitched element in everything I do. In addition to my handmade items, I also make a range of gift items, inspired by the tradition of quilting.
My first ever maker fair was Handmade Arcade 2018 when I was accepted into the Craft Corridor selection of new makers. I had no idea if anyone would be interested in what I was doing, and I was terrified when the doors opened – but the welcome I received from both shoppers and my fellow vendors that day filled me with excitement and love. I’ve now taken part in three holiday Handmade Arcade events, and each one makes me feel so honored to be part of this community of makers and friends, as well as the city that comes out to support them. I can’t wait to be able to see you all again soon!
